Texas nursing CE requirements
Observed on the Texas BON renewal page and CE FAQ during research on 2026-11-03. Our automated recheck on 2026-11-04 was blocked, so confirm on the Board's pages. Official page: Texas board(opens in new tab).
Short answer
Texas nurses meet continuing competency with 20 contact hours of acceptable CE in each two-year licensing period (or a qualifying certification pathway). From September 1, 2026 the Board of Nursing requires nurses who renew or reactivate to document CE through the Nurse Portal CE Module. The Board describes a first-renewal exception.
Requirements by license type
Registered nurse
Observed; recheck pending
20 contact hours per two-year period, documented through the CE Module from September 1, 2026.
- 20 contact hours of acceptable CE each licensing period, or a qualifying national certification route.
- CE Module reporting at renewal or reactivation from September 1, 2026.
- First-renewal exception described by the Board for nurses renewing for the first time.
- Targeted topics (for example nursing jurisprudence and ethics, older adult or geriatric care, forensic evidence collection, human trafficking) apply under specific conditions — check the FAQ.
Licensed vocational nurse
Observed; recheck pending
Texas uses the same Board for LVNs; the continuing competency framework is shared. Confirm targeted topics for your role.
- Read the Board's FAQ for LVN-specific notes.
APRN
Not summarized — check the board
APRNs have additional education for licensure and prescriptive authority. Review the Board's APRN guidance.
- Maintain RN competency.
- Review APRN pharmacology and prescriptive authority education separately.
The CE Module is a reporting step
The CE Module is where you enter the CE that supports your renewal. It is not itself a course. Buying a product named after it does not satisfy the reporting step, and entering a course does not prove that course is acceptable. Keep your certificates.
Targeted topics depend on your practice
Some Texas requirements apply only to nurses in particular settings or with particular duties. Rather than buying every course marketed as Texas-mandatory, read the FAQ and note which apply to you.
Compact status
NurseCompact.com shows Texas as Implemented. Compact status affects where you can practice, not which CE you need — renewal CE follows the license you hold. How the compact works.
