Texas CE Module, Jurisprudence, and Renewal Planning
Applies to: RN, LPN/LVN, APRN · Sources checked 2026-11-03
Short answer
Beginning September 1, 2026, Texas BON guidance requires nurses renewing or reactivating a license to document applicable continuing competency through the Nurse Portal CE Module. The module is a reporting tool, not another name for a nursing jurisprudence-and-ethics course. Check the Board's renewal page and continuing-education FAQ for your requirements and any first-renewal exception.
Distinguish the reporting change from education requirements
The CE Module collects information documenting continuing-competency compliance before a renewal or reactivation application is submitted. It does not mean that purchasing a product labeled Texas jurisprudence automatically completes the portal process. Likewise, entering a course into the portal does not resolve whether the activity meets the Board's acceptance criteria.
Keep the underlying certificates because supporting documentation may still be requested, and some circumstances may require uploads. Follow the current portal instructions instead of relying on screenshots or advice from an earlier implementation stage.
Establish your continuing-competency pathway
Texas's general continuing-competency framework includes 20 contact hours of appropriate continuing nursing education during the two-year licensing period, with an applicable national nursing certification pathway described in Board guidance. Verify which route you qualify to use. Do not assume that holding any certificate, membership, or employer credential meets the alternative pathway.
Education must meet the Board's criteria and relate appropriately to your practice. Compare the completion dates with the relevant licensing period and check the certificate's provider and approval information. A large course bundle may supply enough advertised hours while still leaving a mandatory subject, acceptable-credit issue, or timing problem unresolved.
Review jurisprudence and other targeted subjects
Nursing jurisprudence and nursing ethics are substantive education requirements, distinct from the CE Module's reporting function. Review the FAQ for the required content, interval, and how the subject fits into your continuing-competency obligations. Do not infer that the September 2026 reporting change creates a new universal course with that name.
Other targeted requirements can depend on your role, practice setting, patient population, or prescribing responsibilities. The Board discusses subjects such as older-adult care, forensic evidence collection, human trafficking, and APRN-related education in its guidance. Check which provisions actually apply rather than purchasing every course marketed as mandatory for Texas nurses.
Verify the first-renewal exception and submit carefully
The Board's guidance describes a first-renewal exception for nurses renewing for the first time after initial licensure. Check the current wording, including treatment of targeted requirements, on both the renewal page and FAQ. A statement about CE exception eligibility should not be read as permission to practice on an expired license.
If the pages appear inconsistent for a setting-specific requirement, ask the Board before relying on an exemption. For other renewals, reconcile your certificates with the module entries, address any validation messages, and submit the actual renewal application and fee. Completing education or entering records alone does not renew the license.
Checklist
- Confirm your license status, expiration date, and renewal or reactivation route.
- Read the current renewal page and continuing-education FAQ together.
- Identify your general competency pathway and applicable targeted subjects.
- Verify first-renewal exception eligibility rather than assuming it applies.
- Enter required CE information in the Nurse Portal and retain certificates.
- Submit the renewal application and verify the resulting license status.
Exceptions and limits
- APRN and prescriptive-authority obligations need a separate review alongside RN renewal requirements.
- Late renewal, reactivation, disciplinary conditions, and unusual first-renewal circumstances may require additional steps.
- The Board can change portal documentation instructions; follow current official guidance when submitting.
