California nursing CE requirements

RN facts verified on the California BRN continuing education page on 2026-11-04. Official page: California board(opens in new tab).

Short answer

California registered nurses must complete 30 contact hours of continuing education every two years to renew an active license, under California Code of Regulations section 1451. Nurses renewing for the first time after passing the licensing exam are exempt from the 30 hours but not from the implicit bias requirement.

Requirements by license type

Registered nurse (BRN)

Verified on official page

30 contact hours every two years, completed during the preceding renewal period.

  • 30 contact hours per two-year renewal cycle (CCR §1451).
  • Implicit bias requirement under AB 1407 (2021), applying from January 1, 2023 — including to first-time renewers.
  • First renewal after passing the NCLEX within the past two years: exempt from the 30 hours, but not from implicit bias.
  • Course content must be relevant to the practice of nursing.

Licensed vocational nurse (BVNPT)

Not summarized — check the board

LVNs are licensed by a separate board, the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians. We have not reviewed its CE rules here.

  • Check the BVNPT directly; do not apply the BRN rules above to an LVN license.

APRN certificates (NP, CNS, CNM, CRNA)

Not summarized — check the board

California issues advanced practice certificates through the BRN. Certificate-specific obligations (for example furnishing) need separate review.

  • Maintain the underlying RN renewal requirements.
  • Review the BRN's advanced practice pages for certificate-specific education.

Counting your 30 hours

The BRN asks for 30 contact hours earned during the renewal period that precedes your expiration date. Hours completed in an earlier period cannot be carried forward to make up a shortfall in the current one. Keep the certificate for each course; the BRN may audit and request proof.

The implicit bias requirement sits alongside the 30 hours rather than replacing them. Look for a course that names implicit bias in its objectives and that meets the BRN's acceptable-content rule, then record it under its own line in your tracker.

First renewal after the exam

If you passed the national licensing exam within the past two years and this is your first renewal, the BRN states you are exempt from the CE hours. Its page explains how to record the exemption on the renewal form. The implicit bias requirement still applies, so plan for it even in an exempt cycle.

Other exemptions and inactive status

The BRN describes exemption requests for situations such as inactive status and certain hardships. These are requests, not automatic outcomes. Read the board's current criteria before relying on one.

Compact status

NurseCompact.com shows California as Not a member. Compact status affects where you can practice, not which CE you need — renewal CE follows the license you hold. How the compact works.
