Free Nursing CE: Check the Credit Before You Enroll
Applies to: RN, LPN/LVN, APRN · Sources checked 2026-11-03
Short answer
Free nursing CE can be useful when the activity meets your licensing requirements and includes the documentation you need. Free may mean a sample course, employer-sponsored education, or agency-funded training rather than an unrestricted course library. Check the individual activity before investing your time.
Find out which parts are actually free
A provider may let anyone read course materials while reserving the assessment, nursing credit, or downloadable certificate for paying customers. Another provider may include one complete activity as an introduction to a subscription. Before registering, look for an explicit statement that the nursing contact hours and completion certificate are included at no charge.
Employer-funded education is another route, but access and credit are separate questions. A hospital may pay for an accredited activity, provide internal orientation without nursing CE credit, or reimburse an outside purchase. Ask the education department which option applies. Check whether you can download records after leaving the organization, rather than relying on continued access to an employee portal.
Consider public training without assuming universal credit
Public agencies sometimes offer training without a tuition charge. New York's Office of Children and Family Services, for example, offers free online mandated reporter training. That is a concrete alternative to paying a commercial seller for the same training category, but it does not establish that every public-agency course satisfies every nursing board's requirements.
For a required topic, match the exact program to the authority that sets the requirement. Check the current course version, eligible professions, completion deadline, and any required reporting process. A certificate of attendance for mandated reporter training should not automatically be treated as general nursing contact hours in another state. Verify both uses separately if you intend to claim both.
Verify acceptance at the activity level
Start with your board's renewal instructions, then compare them with the activity's accreditation or approval statement. Identify the organization awarding credit, the number and type of hours, and the intended audience. A recognizable website name or an educationally useful topic does not by itself establish that the activity is acceptable for your license.
Required subjects need an additional check. A free general patient-safety activity may not meet a specifically defined law-and-rules, infection-control, or other mandated course requirement. Look for any required approval number or state-specific designation. If the wording is unclear, send the board or provider the actual course title and approval statement; a broad question about whether a website is accepted may miss the important distinction.
Complete the activity and preserve the evidence
Read completion instructions before beginning. Even a free activity can require an assessment, evaluation, attendance verification, or completion within a limited access period. Check whether the credit-offering period will remain open when you expect to finish. Save the certificate promptly and confirm that it displays your correct name, completion date, activity title, and awarded credit.
Compare free options by usable credit rather than catalog size. Several unrelated sample activities may leave a required topic uncovered or duplicate content you already completed. Build a short list of remaining requirements first, fill the gaps with suitable free activities, and pay only where a free option cannot meet the documented need.
Checklist
- Confirm that access, credit, and the certificate all cost zero.
- Match the activity's approval statement to your board's acceptance rules.
- Check required-topic approval separately from general CE acceptance.
- Complete every assessment, evaluation, or attendance step.
- Download the certificate and verify its identifying details.
- Record which renewal requirement the activity satisfies.
Exceptions and limits

- APRN certification or pharmacology requirements may not be satisfied by general nursing activities.
- A free offer can expire or change; verify the terms displayed when you enroll.
